Abstract

With the ever-increasing housing prices in recent years, the dream of owning a house and getting rid of the phenomenon of renting has become a serious challenge for families. The present article tries to study the culture of tenancy and its semantic consequences among the tenants of Tehran using the interpretative ethnography approach. Analyzing people's mentality about the phenomenon of renting, their way of life, understanding and interpreting the different meanings of renting as well as its semantic consequences are among the central questions that this article seeks to answer. The data was collected using the interview technique and in-depth interviews with 40 tenants living in rich and poor neighborhoods were surveyed and the framework analysis method was also used to analyze the data. The findings of the research indicate an increasing decrease in the control of the tenants in managing the conditions, followed by the formation of a sense of despair and social frustration, the weakening of neighborhood relations and neighborhood identity, and the social capital has been weakened. In such a situation, the psychological and economic security of renters, especially in low-income neighborhoods, and their hope for the future have been jeopardized, and by allocating a significant portion of the family's income to monthly rent, the lives of Tehrani renters have been difficult.
